| Sitges is an absolutely
beautiful and special small coastal town about 40 kilometers south
west of the city of Barcelona. It is best known for its much-frequented
beaches, nightspots, fantastic restaurants and historical sites.
It has for decades been a popular haunt for artists and actors
and those that like the finer things in life. Sitges is very much
unspoilt and still has pebbled streets and regular local festivals |
While the roots of Sitges'
artsy reputation date back to the late 19th century, when Catalan
painter Santiago Rusinol took up residence there during the summer,
the town really came into its own during the 1960s, when it was
the only center for the counterculture on the mainland of Spain
(then still under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco), and became
known as a sort of "Ibiza in miniature".
Very popular with gay tourists in the summer, Sitges has something
to offer to all discerning travelers. It is a jewel in the crown
of the Mediterranean and a varied and dynamic cultural oasis,
providing a nice contrast from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona.
In July and August the town is taken over by families (generally
Spanish rather than foreign as in other tourist towns in Catalonia)
and the streets are packed with a rare but harmonious mix of culture
and class.
Sitges is reknowned worldwide for its film festival held at the
end of summer each year and the fabulous Carnival held in Februray.
